Winter

Nature sleeps. It’s rainy and cold. Brrrrr. Winter is here!

A natureza dorme. Chove e faz frio. Brrrrr. É chegado o Inverno!

 

And what would winter be without a song. So, we listened and role-played the song “I’m a little snowman”. Oh, come on… Let’s sing it again! I want to hear you!

Mas o que seria o inverno sem uma canção! Assim, ouvimos e dramatizamos a canção “I’m a little snowman” com a ajuda dos bonecos de neve que construímos. Oh, vamos lá… Vamos cantá-la novamente! Quero ouvir-vos!

 

Then we illustrated the song. And we discovered some artists… See for yourselves!

De seguida, os alunos ilustraram a canção. E que artistas alguns alunos se revelaram… vejam por vocês! 

 

By describing the changes in nature that take place by this time, we introduced the new season: winter. Then, we illustrated the vocabulary worked in classes. We made some snowmen and snowflakes for the winter display. And we end up with some pretty good works!

E foi assim, descrevendo as alterações que ocorrem na natureza nesta altura, que introduzimos a nova estação do ano: o inverno. De seguida, ilustramos o vocabulário trabalhado nas aulas. Construíram-se, por exemplo, bonecos de neve e flocos de neve para o nosso cartaz de Inverno. E que bonitos ficaram alguns dos trabalhos!

School Subjects

As students we have to learn different things from different areas. So, fourth graders from Balselhas learnt the school subjects. And there are many: Portuguese, English, Maths, History, Geography, Sport, etc.

Enquanto alunos nós temos de aprender assuntos diferentes de diferentes áreas. Assim, os alunos do 4º ano de Balselhas aprenderam as disciplinas escolares. E são muitas: Português, Inglês, Matemática, História, Geografia, Desporto, etc.

 

As a final project, they were asked to make a poster on the topic “School Subjects”.  They had to illustrate one school subject they like and one they don’t; and they had to say in which day they have that class. Then, they presented it to the whole class.  And what a great job they all did! See it for yourselves!

Como trabalho final, os alunos elaboraram um cartaz alusivo às “Disciplinas Escolares”. Eles tiveram de ilustrar uma disciplina de que gostavam e uma de que não gostam; e em que dias têm essas aulas. De seguida, apresentaram o trabalho a toda a turma. E que trabalho fantástico todos fizeram! Vejam por vocês!

 

 

 



School

All classes learnt about school, the classroom and the school objects. We did lots of activities and games related to the topic. Here are some examples.  

Todas as turmas falaram sobre a escola, a sala de aula e os materiais de sala de aula. Fizemos várias atividades e jogos relacionados com o tema. Aqui ficam alguns exemplos.       

 

My bag…

First grade students from Balselhas coloured a bag and some objects and then cut and pasted them on the right place. Do you still remember the intruder??

Os alunos do 1º ano de Balselhas tiveram de colorir uma mochila e alguns objetos que depois cortaram e colaram no respetivo lugar. Ainda te lembras do intruso?

 

My pencil case…

Students drew their pencil case and wrote about its objects and colours. Then, they showed it to the whole class. Look, listen and enjoy...

Os alunos desenharam o seu estojo e escreveram sobre seus objetos e cores. Depois apresentaram os seus trabalhos à turma. Apesar do nervosismo, os alunos já começam a demonstrar um maior à vontade com este tipo de atividades. Ouçam e disfrutem das suas belas apresentações...

Halloween

The last weeks of October were days to talk about Halloween, a festivity students love! We started by talking about the origins and traditions of Halloween. One of the stories told was the story of Jack o'lantern, which you can read here...

As últimas semanas de outubro foram dias dedicados ao Halloween (Dia das Bruxas), uma festa que os alunos adoram! Começamos por sobre as origens e tradições do Dia das bruxas. Uma das histórias contadas foi a história do Jack-o-lantern que podem relembrar aqui...

 

Then we learned, wrote and role-played some Halloween rhymes. We also made some adorable ghosts, to use in the dramatization of the song... And they were scary!! BOOOO! Here is the song and some of your works...

Depois aprendemos, escrevemos e dramatizamos algumas rimas de Halloween. Nós também criamos um fantasminha em papel, para nos ajudar na dramatização da canção... E que assustadores eram eles! BOOOO! Aqui fica a canção e alguns dos vossos trabalhos...

Students also illustrated some of the vocabulary learnt for the Halloween Display and exposition. Besides this, students were asked to build scary things at home with their relatives. And what a great job they did! Thank you all for the collaboration.

Os alunos também ilustraram algum do vocabulário abordado nas aulas para o placard e exposição de Halloween. Para além disto, foi-lhes pedido que construíssem, em conjunto com os pais, figuras assustadoras para nos ajudarem a decorar os espaços da escola. E que excelente trabalho fizeram! Trick-or-Treat

On the 31st October we all went trick or treating. Students performed the songs learnt and played the game "Trick-or-Treat". In the end, they got a Halloween present: a nice pumpkin with some sweets in it. You liked it, didn't you! 

No dia 31 de outubro, os alunos visitaram algumas turmas para as quais apresentaram as canções aprendidas e jogaram ao "doce ou travessura". No fim,  receberam um presente de Halloween: uma simpática abóbora com doces no seu interior. Gostaram, não gostaram!!

 

  

Happy Easter

It's Easter time. We always learn songs and some new words related to the festivity. Also, we cannot forget the decorations. Here are some beautiful paitings from students of all classes.

É tempo de Páscoa. Nós aprendemos sempre canções e palavras novas relacionadas com a festividade. Também, não podemos esquecer as decorações. Aqui estão algumas belas pinturas de alunos de todas as turmas.

Ordinal numbers

"How to teach a certain theme in an enthusiastic way, in order to captivate our students?"
This is the answer we teachers always look for, when planning activities.
Providing a race is always a nice way to introduce "ordinal numbers". 
So, there was a race, and each runner built his place marker.
I think it worked just fine.

"Como ensinar um determinado tema de uma forma entusiástica, de modo a cativar os nossos alunos?"
Esta é a resposta que todos nós, professores, procuramos quando planeamos as atividades.
Providenciar uma corrida é sempre uma boa maneira de introduzir os "adjetivos numerais" (até agora chamados números ordinais).
Então, fez-se a corrida e cada aluno construiu o seu marcador de lugar de chegada. Penso que resultou mesmo bem.

Autumn

In "ARTICULAÇÃO", all schools worked around the autumn theme and English was not an exception!

Em ARTICULAÇÃO todas as escolas trabalharam o Outono e o Inglês não foi exceção!

 

Besides working the vocabulary related to the season through some games, students learned the song "Autumn Time is coming" in association with the colours theme.  Students from Balselhas, performed this song to all community at St. Martin’s Party!

Para além do vocabulário alusivo ao tema, trabalhado nas aulas com recurso a alguns jogos, os alunos aprenderam a canção "Autumn time is coming" em associação com o tema das cores. Os alunos de Balselhas, apresentaram ainda esta canção a toda a comunidade, na Festa de S. Martinho.

Then, among other activities, students illustrated some of the vocabulary learnt and coloured some leaves for the autumn display.

Escola do Outeiro

O placard de Outono de Inglês foi construído com a colaboração da prof. Susana e das suas turmas. Mais tarde, juntaram-se os fabulosos trabalhos realizados por alunos, professores titulares e também pela equipa do pré-escolar, de forma a preparar o ginásio da escola para a realização da já tradicional Feira de Outono.

  

Desde já, muito obrigada a todos os que compraram produtos da feira de Outono e ajudaram a Escola de Balselhas e do Outeiro! :-)

 

Pictogram - months of the year

We can join forces with our colleagues, and articulate several themes with other areas. To practice the months of the year, we used our mathematical skills and knowledge to create a pictogram. 

Students are used to interpretate data looking at the book. This time, we collected our own data, room by room; analised it; and finaly built our graphic. 

Every student from first to fourth grades, regardless of being an english class student, is inserted somewhere in a month... the month of their birthdate. 

I truly believe each and every student loved doing this activity. 

The result can be thanked to all students of third grade, in Retorta, in close collaboration with their teacher Francisco Rodrigues. 

Thank you, ever so much.  

Podemos unir forças com os nossos colegas e articular vários temas com outras áreas. Para praticar os meses do ano, utilizamos as nossas habilidades e os conhecimentos matemáticos para criar um pictograma.

Os alunos estão habituados a interpretar os dados, olhando para um livro. Desta vez, recolhemos a nossa própria informação e dados, sala a sala; analisámo-los; e finalmente construímos o nosso gráfico.

Todos os alunos, do primeiro ao quarto anos, independentemente de frequentarem a aula de inglês ou não, estão inseridos algures num mês... no mês do seu aniversário.

Eu, sinceramente, acho que todos os alunos adoraram fazer esta atividade.

O resultado é devido a todos os alunos do terceiro ano, da Retorta, em estreita colaboração com o professor do grupo, Francisco Rodrigues.

Reading Contest - a thank you note!

We participated in a reading contest. My classes (4th grade) chose the student wich they believed could best represent each group, in order to show our older colleagues what we already can read.

I always teach my students to participate, regardless of winning or loosing. To face the task and live the experience is the most rewarding thing. 

My brave chosen ones were Tiago (Retorta) and Simão (Moirais). 

I'm happy to say that they both made me very proud and showed me my efforts are worthy. Simão even won second place. Tiago, so nervous he was, also outdid himself. Congratulations to both of you specially. 

Also my best regards to all participants of other groups, and I cannot forget all my students who willingly offered themselves to represent their groups, teacher and schools. 

Please, don't ever loose that courage to overcome your fears and to try new things. That door will give you some tears, but also lots and lots of joys.

Nós participamos num concurso de leitura. As minhas turmas (4º anos) escolheram o aluno que achavam que melhor representaria cada grupo, de maneira a mostrar aos nossos colegas mais velhos aquilo que já somos capazes de ler.

Ensino sempre aos meus alunos que participem, independentemente de ganharem ou perderem. Enfrentar a tarefa e viver a experiência é o mais gratificante.

Os meus bravos escolhidos foram o Tiago (Retorta) e Simão (Moirais).

Estou feliz por dizer que ambos me deixaram muito orgulhosa e mostraram-me que os meus esforços valem a pena. Simão até ganhou o segundo lugar. Tiago, tão nervoso que estava, também se superou. Parabéns aos dois, especialmente.

Também os meus melhores cumprimentos a todos participantes de outros grupos, e, não posso esquecer todos os meus alunos que voluntariamente se ofereceram para representar os seus grupos, professora e escolas.

Por favor, nunca percam essa coragem de superar os vossos medos e de experimentar coisas novas. Essa porta vai trazer-vos algumas lágrimas, mas também muitas e muitas alegrias.
